In the Far East, Persimmon ’Tipo’ has been a well- known and beloved deciduous tree or tall shrub for ages. Its appreciated crop was used in healing and it was called the ’Fruit of the Gods’. They attributed many positive effects to the crop. This plant grows to 4-6m height and develops a branching, dense, loose crown. The big, shiny, dark green leaves have a thick, elliptical or oval shape and they decorate with yellow, burgundy and purple colours come fall. It is self- pollinating and blooms in the end of May and the beginning of June. The big, orange crop has a little compressed, spherical shape and a weight of 27-50 dkg. The fruit is smooth, juicy, aromatic and sweet. It can be eaten fresh or an appetizing jam and juice can be made from it. ‘Tipo’ loves a sunny, warm, south- facing location and a loosely- structured, nutritious soil with good permeability. Its water demand is moderate and the young plants need watering regularly. ‘Tipo’ can decorate our garden as an ornamental tree, especially in the fall with the colour of the foliage and then with the orange crops. It is an excellent choice if you want a unique plant in your garden which can live for hundreds of years.
