Cercis siliquastrum
Height: 0,3–0,4 m
The Judas tree is a deciduous tree about 4-6 m tall as a shrub, or 6-10 m tall as a tree, often with several trunks. Its bark is reddish brown on young branches, later black, resembling a cracked trunk. The foliage consists of scattered, roughly 10 cm long, kidney-shaped, whole or slightly lobed, rounded, dark green leaves. Pink flowers develop in abundant clusters on older branches, woody stems, and even on the trunk in April-May, before the leaves appear. Its fruit is a pod 5-9 cm long, flat and reddish brown, which stays on the plant throughout the winter. It likes a sunny spot and well-structured soil. Its water needs are moderate; it is advisable to water it after planting, while older plants can tolerate drought. It can be planted as a specimen plant, in larger gardens, parks, or as a street tree.
