Prunus laurocerasus Baumgartner
Cherry laurel Baumgartner is vigorous, about 2-2.5 m tall, with a dense system of branches; the shoots branch upward and the crown is funnel-shaped. Its foliage consists of glossy, ovate-elliptical leaves, smaller than those of other laurels, which are orange-red when they emerge and then gradually turn dark green. It blooms in April-May, with white, fragrant, upright, multi-flowered clusters 5-12 cm long. Its berries, first red and then black, appear in late summer. Because of their toxicity, they are not suitable for human consumption, but they have ornamental value and birds like them. Its light needs are moderate; it can be planted in a sunny or partially shaded spot. It likes well-structured, nutrient-rich soil. Its water needs are moderate. It tolerates pruning well. It deserves a place in themed gardens, in gardens friendly to birds and insects, or even in nature-friendly gardens.
