Kumquat is a small, low evergreen tree. Its dark green, glossy leaves are lance-shaped. Its fragrant, small white flowers grow singly or in clusters. The fruit is elliptical, orange when ripe, and 2-3 cm in size. Unlike other citrus fruits, the kumquat's peel is sweet and is eaten together with the tart flesh. Kumquat is a good source of vitamins A, C and E, as well as fiber and antioxidants. It needs a sunny, warm spot and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It needs a moderate amount of water. It is frost sensitive, so it must be prepared for winter. It is most often grown in pots as an extremely decorative accent in the garden or on the terrace. It is an excellent addition to grilled dishes or roasted meat, as well as to cocktails and fruit salads.
